Charhajare, Kangpokpi District | 13 August 2026: On the occasion of Patriot’s Day, The Sangai Foundation, in collaboration with the Navin Gorkha Youth Club, Charhajare, organised a cleanliness drive at the Charhajare Village Cremation Ground on 13 August 2026.
The initiative was undertaken with the objective of promoting cleanliness, environmental responsibility and a sense of collective ownership towards important community spaces. The cremation ground is an important place for the local community, and maintaining its surroundings in a clean and respectful condition is an important part of preserving the dignity of the place.
Members and volunteers of The Sangai Foundation and Navin Gorkha Youth Club came together to clean the compound and its surrounding areas. The activity also provided an opportunity for young people and community members to participate directly in a meaningful community service initiative. Rather than viewing cleanliness as the responsibility of a particular group or authority, the programme encouraged the idea that keeping shared spaces clean is a responsibility that belongs to everyone.
The cleanliness drive was accompanied by a small but meaningful tree plantation activity. Two trees — a Bargad (Banyan) tree and a Peepal (Bodhi) tree — were planted within the cremation ground on the occasion.The two trees were generously donated by Shri Chakra Bahadur Karki as a contribution towards the community and environmental wellbeing of Charhajare.
The choice of these trees carries both environmental and cultural significance. Banyan and Peepal trees are traditionally associated with longevity, shelter and community spaces, while also providing valuable ecological benefits. As they grow, the trees will contribute shade, greenery and a healthier environment around the crematorium.
The plantation also symbolised a longer-term commitment to the community. While a cleanliness drive creates an immediate visible impact, planting trees is an investment in the future. The saplings planted today can, with proper care and protection, grow into lasting assets for generations to come.
The Sangai Foundation sincerely appreciates Shri Chakra Bahadur Karki for his generous contribution and support towards the initiative. The Foundation hopes that such individual and community participation will inspire more people to come forward and contribute towards creating cleaner, greener and more sustainable community spaces.

A Meaningful Tribute on Patriot’s Day
Patriot’s Day is observed in Manipur in remembrance of the brave patriots who sacrificed their lives during the Anglo-Manipuri War of 1891. Holding a community service and environmental activity on this occasion added a meaningful tribute to the day’s observance.
The initiative connected remembrance with action — honouring the spirit of sacrifice and service by contributing positively to the community and environment.
